When Anger Flares, Grab the Gentleness: Wisdom Wednesday

Lisa Cherry —  December 15, 2010

I hate it when I behave like a nine-year-old.

Last week an argument broke out in the living room. My motherly counsel was needed. So I arrived on the scene with intent to calm the storm.

“You always take his side!”
“He never gets in trouble!”
“You always punish me and never punish him!”

Somehow the angry words flying in the room flipped a switch inside of me.

“No, I don’t!” I raised my voice to proclaim in defense. “I am sick of you kids arguing!”

And I had done it again. My harsh words poured out, like gasoline, on the fire. I had fueled the anger instead of extinguishing it.

On better mom-days, I remember the wisdom of Proverbs 15:1:  A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

My personal interpretation: Lisa, do not act like a nine-year-old and shout back when faced with an angry situation. It will just make matters worse. Stop. Grab the gentleness that is flowing as a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Lower your voice. Relax your posture. Release a gentle answer. Even if it is a strong “no.” Then the wrath cycle will be interrupted and turned away.

Wow, it works. His wisdom really works!

Lord, when anger ignites, help me to tap into Your gentleness. Quickly and as needed.

Let’s meditate for 30 seconds on this verse: A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Each Wisdom Wednesday post is inspired by a verse from the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds to the posting date.
