Passion for God is Not Enough: Wisdom Wednesday

Lisa Cherry —  January 19, 2011

It’s a dark, fallen, perverse culture that we live in.  Where would we be without the faithful, zealous remnant of believers who truly love Jesus?   Where would we be without those who are salt and light standing up to declare that Jesus is Lord?  Clearly passion for our God is essential.

But where will we be if we are simply functioning as an emotionally charged church, singing passionate worship songs on Sunday, but failing to stay centered on God's word and His ways the rest of the week?  And what will happen if we are zealous Christian parents modeling an emotionally convincing love for Jesus in front of our children on Sunday, but we’re not securely fixed on His wisdom and understanding as we interact with them the other six days of the week?   It would be so easy to spin out of control and fly off the wheel.

Proverbs 19:2 warns us of this progression.  Without the knowledge of the word of God, we will be hasty in our decisions and miss God's way.  As I was meditating on this verse this morning, a sobering warning hit my heart:   Lisa, you need God's word like never before.  Yesterday's manna of God's word will not be enough.

I heard God's warning deep in my heart, and I responded by immediately grabbing my Bible much like a hungry woman grabs her breakfast cereal.

As I opened the word, my eyes sat gazing on 1 Samuel chapter 15.  Obviously I had a history with this chapter, as my page was marked up pretty heavily with underlines and circles and highlights.  I got to verse 22-23 where Samuel was giving a strong correcting word to Saul for disobeying the instructions of the Lord as he went into battle.  I remembered again of how Saul's disobedience to God's word had cost him his kingship and eventually his very life.  I noticed a little handwritten note that sometime in the past I had written to myself:

Lisa, obedience is better than whatever sacrifice of service you make.

Wow, in one moment of time the Holy Spirit jerked my soul to attention!  Deep inside me I heard the power of His word of warning.  And I realized afresh I did not just need that verse highlighted and circled in my Bible like a trophy or memorial.  I needed it off the pages afresh to guide my ways and prevent me from becoming hasty and missing the way.

To be the Christian mom my kids need and my God expects, I must go deeper into God's word than ever before.  In this new year with the turmoil and confusion escalating all around us, I MUST have my daily time in God's instruction book.  I MUST grow in wisdom and knowledge even as my heart maintains its zealous passion for Him!

I have made my plan for studying God's word in the new year....and I have had my warning about the dangers of skipping out on my own plan.  How about you?  Have you purposely planned to grow in knowledge this year?  Are you staying on the master potter's wheel as soft clay in His hands?  Are you prepared to press into the mentors He has placed in your life, to grow in your parenting skills and not just your parenting passion?

God, we come to you today as a needy people.  Ever mindful, Lord, of our helpless condition without your magnificent intervention in our lives.  Help us to maintain our passion and zeal for You in 2011, even as the pressures of our evil word crowd around our hearts for attention.  But God, we know that passion for You will not be enough.  We need to mature in our wisdom and knowledge like never before.  We do not want to be shallow or flaky Christians.  We do not want to be shallow or flaky parents either.  Will You help us to grow up this year?  Will You take our meager levels of commitment to Your word and give us Your grace for increase?  We thank you, Lord, for opening up to us new plans for study and new power for diligence through the ministry of Your precious Holy Spirit. Amen.

Now take 30 seconds to meditate on Proverbs 19:2  It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way.

Each Wisdom Wednesday post is inspired by a verse from the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds to the posting date.

That is so true. It is something I often struggle with, keeping Christ before me every day, and is one of the things He is working on in me.
