Consider Making a Change: Tip of the Week #15

It was a fiasco. I had a 6-month-old, a 21-month-old, a 3-year-old, and a 4½-year-old who all needed baths before bedtime. Every night. Doug was usually working late hours. My three older children were tired of little kid land, and I had to face bath time all alone.

I dreaded it. It seemed like no matter how much patience I would muster, I would end up in a “Just get in your beds, NOW,” sort of yell before the last light was off. There went my composure, spiraling down the drain with the bath water.

Failure. Bad Mom. Those accusing words sounded in my heart as I stepped down the hallway toward my room.

I replayed my woes to a friend, hoping she would assure me that I was not inflicting permanent damage on my young flock.

She looked thoughtfully into my eyes and said, “Lisa, have you ever considered giving those baths before you served up dinner? Like at 5:00 or so? If you are not going anywhere, pajamas are fine to eat it.”

Why, I had never even considered such a thing! It was always playtime, pick up toys, dinner, clean the kitchen and then tackle baths! I was at first hesitant to even entertain the idea.

A ray of hope glimmered in my heart and I wondered if my friend had discovered something truly powerful. The next day I gave her suggestion a try.

It worked! What liberation! I actually had the energy and patience level left to tuck my kids in, and give them a proper goodnight.

The moral of this story: When daily life gets rough, consider making a change. Ask God to send you a fresh idea, or a sister who sees things differently. Think outside the box. Be willing to humbly change.

Adjust the schedule, or revise the procedure. Sometimes something this simple can increase your family’s peace level phenomenally.

    Did I ever need this today! Thanks for the reminder, Lisa. Sometimes the only problem is me being stuck on "my way" of doing things.
