Tide Warning: Sex Education by Celebrity Lifestyle – Wisdom Wednesday

Lisa Cherry —  January 26, 2011

Stuck in a long, slow line at the grocery check-out line, I found myself awash in the images and headlines of the culture we live in.

The magazines with their darlings, the celebrities, lined my way on both sides. I couldn’t help but notice the highlights lowpoints of their lifestyles.

So and so’s new relationship with so and so…
So in so divorces so and so…
So and so fights for baby in bitter custody battle…
So and so looks good on the beach…

I was sickened by the news; I really did not care to see this.

But right there in full view was the standard sex education course offered to our children. As frontline moms, we had better assess the roots of this culture gone mad.

Today I’m looking at Proverbs 26:1, and I believe it reveals that a significant one of those roots is the problem of misplaced honor. Giving honor to fools is as ridiculous as snow in summer, and as dangerous as rain in harvest time.

We parade unbelievers in all their folly in front of our children’s eyes as if their lives are the highest definition of success.

Think of a famous rock star. You’ve seen her picture everywhere, on TV, on your computer screen…is that her image on your clothing?

Name your favorite athlete. Do you follow his every move and buy the brand of sports shoes he promotes?

How about that film star whose movies are simply unmissable, no matter what the content?

We get their autographs. We put pictures of them on our walls. We plaster their accomplishments as applications on our ipods. How easy it is to get drawn into the undertow.

But what about giving honor to your hardworking Dad?
Or giving honor to your quiet, 97-year-old grandma
Or giving honor to the teacher who inspired and encouraged you.
Aren’t these ideas just old-fashioned and backward?

How hard we will have to swim against the culture tide to elevate the right and truly honorable role models in our kids’ eyes. So how do we do it, Frontline Moms?

Number one has to be our own example. Whom are we honoring, and why?

Number two, we must talk, talk, talk to our children about the differences from an early age. In the checkout line. In the car. In family devotions. In front of TV, at the theater, and at the dinner table. We must make it our goal it out-talk and out-image the media blaring all around us.

Confronting the culture….seems like an enormous task. But we have God’s promise that He will raise up His standard against this flood. And raising frontline kids is what He has called us to do.

God help me to never underestimate the power of influence I have over my own family. Help me, Lord, to recognize the fools around me who need my prayers, but not my honor. I need Your help, Lord, to train my kids to discern and to honor.

Take 30 seconds to meditate on Proverbs 26:1 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, honor is not fitting for a fool.
