Archives For January 2011

As I reported a couple of weeks ago, listening to a four-year-old's response to the issue of death is often hilarious.  Since two of his beloved great-grandmas have passed away in the last few months, he has been "playing out" this concept in some rather unusual ways.

A picture of a man resting on his back under the clouds prompted the question, "Mommy, is that man dead?"

His toys, whom he talks for, are often heard discussing the issue. It goes something like this...

Giraffe:  Come on Monkey, get your coat on. We're going to the store.
Monkey:  Not now; I'm being dead.  Maybe after our nap.

Between Christmas and New Year’s, our family again set aside time this year for a retreat. We took three days and two nights at a beautiful, out-of-the-way vacation cabin. The family togetherness, touch football, and home-cooked spaghetti were great. But even greater were the sweet times of worship and the heartfelt sharing of each family member. We call it our Family Vision Retreat, and it was again a smashing success.

It’s become an annual tradition that I really look forward to. We lay aside the everyday hustle and bustle, and check in on the inner thoughts of each of our brood. From oldest to youngest there are always a few surprises!

It’s a dark, fallen, perverse culture that we live in.  Where would we be without the faithful, zealous remnant of believers who truly love Jesus?   Where would we be without those who are salt and light standing up to declare that Jesus is Lord?  Clearly passion for our God is essential.

But where will we be if we are simply functioning as an emotionally charged church, singing passionate worship songs on Sunday, but failing to stay centered on God's word and His ways the rest of the week?  And what will happen if we are zealous Christian parents modeling an emotionally convincing love for Jesus in front of our children on Sunday, but we’re not securely fixed on His wisdom and understanding as we interact with them the other six days of the week?   It would be so easy to spin out of control and fly off the wheel.

My husband Doug wows the kids with his original bedtime stories.  He always has a story line going on, with a made up cast of characters such as “The Mountain Family” or “The Island Family.”   Each evening there’s a new installment with crazy adventures that sometimes don’t even make sense, especially when the storyteller nods off while his mouth is still moving.

"Code orange!  Code Orange!"  This very unusual announcement came over the hospital intercom as I sat at the hospital recently with my sick grandma.

A flurry of activity erupted at the nurse's desk.  As a former nurse, I was intrigued at the scene.  The team pulled out the emergency manual to figure out what they were being asked to do.  A Code Orange must have been something unfamiliar.

The diagnosis: Natural disaster with possible chemical damages.  Now that’s the kind of code that will send a whole hospital to the news to figure out what's going on! Continue reading “Onions That Kill? Funny Friday” »
