Why I Changed the Way I Pray For My Kids Today

I want to see a real deal of a move of God in this generation.  And I am asking God to let it begin in my family.

I don't want my kids to just "keep going to church." I want them to arise out of mediocrity and do great exploits for our King.

Today I was praying through our prayer guide for 30 Days of Prayer for a Not Open Revolution and I was blown away by what I saw.

Our prayer emphasis today was for the King Josiah’s of this generation to arise. If you are not familiar with his story, check it out in 2 Kings 22 and 23. Josiah became king of Judah at age eight after his father who was a wicked leader was assassinated. He was one of the few Godly kings of Judah who followed in the ways of King David.

Josiah nobly began a restoration project of the temple when his officials ran across the book of the law. Since his nation had been backslidden from God, Josiah had not heard the word of the Lord. In 2 Kings 22:11 we read of his remarkable response to the reading of the law:

"When the King heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes."

Then later we read how he tore down all the false gods of his day and lead his nation to massive revival.

That is why our prayer focus today was so important.  We desperately need leaders to arise in this generation who will respond to the Word of the Lord again and lead us to revival!

So today I was praying that my own children would be a part of this great Not Open Revolution and be like King Josiah. As I was praying, I looked ahead on the page of my Bible to the rest of chapter 22. That’s when I discovered something that transformed my prayer.

The prophetess Huldah came to Josiah and told him of God’s response to his heart of repentance. Here is the piece of what she said to him that pierced my heart this morning:  These are the words of the Lord here:

“Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the Lord when you heard what I have spoken against this place… because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I also have heard you, declares the Lord.”  2 Kings 22:19

Can you see it, parents? God will need to do a deeper work in our midst if we are to see the tide turn with only 1% of our kids’ generation living a biblical worldview!

We need to see something happen that will jar us. Not comfort us.

So today I changed my prayers:

Lord, I ask You to make my kids’ hearts responsive to You.

Cause them to humble themselves before You in a way that is remarkable and supernatural.

Lord, orchestrate such massive penetration of the Word of God to their hearts that they would respond by a tearing-their-robes style conviction and great weeping of soul.

God, we are desperate for Your word and Your presence. We are desperate for a move of Your Spirit. Whatever it takes to bring us back to You, we want it Lord!!

And Lord, by Your mercy, let this whole process begin with me and my husband. Turn us upside down for You. Send us to lead our generation to the foot of Your cross again.

Wow. I sensed God’s power as I prayed this radical prayer.  And now I wonder…

What would happen if thousands of us parents began praying this same request for our kids??
