Archives For Family Fun Friday

micah minus one appendixBy Lisa Cherry

Last Sunday, I was very grateful to be finished with our tour, and to have been on my regular post at home.

Micah, our 15 year old, awoke before church complaining of an odd abdominal pain. I must confess my years of mothering experience caused me to go into auto mode. Probably gas or a bug coming on. No big deal. Just wait it out.

Well....a few hours later with a right-sided, bent-over boy and I wasn't too interested in waiting it out!

Ten kids but our first appendectomy. I have to say, Micah was a champ! No complaining. No drama. Just guts. No pun intended.

Isn't modern medicine a miracle?! Another era, another part of the world......and Micah could have not been here with us!

Thank you God!

Will you join me in prayer today for the thousands and thousands of mothers and fathers who do not have access to good medical care for their children?

This week has been incredibly hectic as we are in our busiest month of travel of the entire ATF tour. So I found myself p-r-e-s-s-i-n-g to get everything done to keep my family comfortable and minimize the disruption on their lives. So i found myself doing hard stuff like grocery shopping at 10:00 pm and cooking chili, vegetable soup, and muffins for 10 all at the same time. I kept my bags packed from last week end hoping the wrinkles will re-fall out when I recycle the clothes to this weekend. So this was not a good week to turn on my kitchen sink and not find any hot water.

Remember, we are the clean people. We wash our dishes and pick up our house right on time! See our Messy House Weirdness HERE.

So.....

After Doug's two attempts at fixing the offending appliance, we are having some family fun here.water heater

Can you hear it now?

Mom, how am I going to take a shower?

Mom, how am I supposed to do these dishes?

Awwww.....some forms of family bonding will require a little more from Mom than others!

Smile, Lisa, smile!

Count it all joy! (James 1)

Use even this to make a family memory!

It’s Family Fun Friday at Frontline Moms.

We have a tradition here at Frontline Moms.  We spend so much of the week unmasking and frontlining and aiming for the remnant, that we need a little dose of Family Fun come Friday!

Kalyn Cherry Waller

Kalyn has not turned Hindu....she was simply a mama desperate for some sticker entertainment in flight  with a 20 month old! Ahhhhhhhh.....traveling as Grammy has neat perks. I am assuming someone else calculated the snacks, the diaper and the toy count.  I just get to take pictures and watch her discover the airplane lights.Kalyn Cherry Waller

This week I have been particularly alerted to the wonder of the seasons of life. As surely as spring beings its annual transformations without my assistance, the seasons of my family's life  keep rolling along whether I want them to or not.  As a younger mom, I would often look ahead wanting to rush myself forward to the next plateau or development. Now, I want to slow everyone down! But in reality, I don't have the luxury of either option. For God, himself, is the orchestrator of seasons.

So my next best option? Enjoy.....I mean really enjoy....the season we are in. Take time to laugh at their silly Kyla Wallerjokes and remember the corny movie line with them. That is my family fun advice for this week. Simple. And yet profound.

Oh, I know we are all busy keeping our lives running and achieving and earning. But the best are the moments when you catch a glimpse afresh at why you are running, achieving, and earning anyway.

P.S. .....We made it a whole week with keeping our house in greater order! I think we are on to something this time! Read about our Messy House Weirdness HERE.

Funny Friday Messy House

by Lisa Cherry

Some of you who read this post today will simply not be ale to relate. If that's you, then please pray for the rest of us who can.

At the Cherry house, we have a terrible chronic problem.....

Messy House

Oh, it's not a new issue. It's just one that seems to dog us year after year. "Why is it we can't seem to keep our house clean like the _________family," we have been known to lament. And then we would just raise up a new chore list system, roll up our sleeves and try a little harder.

Well, this morning our hardest efforts of failure came to a screeching halt. A family meeting was called to "get us back on track again" but the meeting was not going well. In fact, it was going terrible.

Our troops were looking horribly defeated. Our punishment systems were exhausted. And a sense of hopelessness was beginning to set in.

We had been defeated by a bunch of odd toys, stray socks, and dirty cups.

But that's when it happened. That's when the Holy Spirit breathed fresh life into our vacuum cleaner and dirty clothes hamper.

We, the Cherry's are not failures, He reminded us,....yet we had adopted a failure attitude.

We are not slobs although we had adopted a piggish aroma.

Why? Because we had all self identified ourselves as MESSY PEOPLE and FAILURES!

Even Josiah in his little six year old way showed us the depth of our mis-thinking when he innocently began asking us in the middle of our meeting how many punishment points he would be getting that day since he was sure ( in advance) that he would be making a new mess and forgetting to clean it up!

As a man thinks in his heart....so is he, Proverbs says. No wonder our behavior has been slipping! Too much emphasis on our weaknesses and not enough focus on who God made us to be!

So we decided to change our thoughts....and change our beliefs.

Our new strategy is already producing better results.  Think clean. Think orderly. Think peace. Think beauty. Think love for work. Think hospitality. Think love for your brother and sister. Think success......

Ethan, our 12 year old even found us a dandy scripture to meditate on.

And now some laughter has returned to our hallway. Oh, we still have a few crumbs floating in our midst as you can see from our picture. But we are once again a team. An army. .....A family.

Zoo Ethan Lydia JosiahBy Lisa Cherry

We were just about the only warm-blooded creatures outside the animal houses at the St. Louis zoo yesterday. Why?

Because it was about 36 degrees outside and breezy, so every other tourist wisely chose the science museum instead.

We had planned to stop off at the zoo on the way to the Tulsa Acquire the Fire event ever since I realized I could drive to the event with all of the kids.

Spring break is great that way. So even when the weather forecasters lowered the expected temperature by 20 degrees, there was no way I could disappoint my six year old, Josiah. For him, the zoo is the best place in the world.

My teens had trouble grasping why I wanted to be cold. However, they rose to the occasion admirably when I explained something about love languages, little boxes of animal crackers, and the fact that they had each had their days of animal longing.

Zoo three by elephantAs I looked around at my van full of blessings, I noted all the other ways that love is spelled to them.....

T-r-a-c-k m-e-e-t

H-a-i-r s-a-l-o-n

L-a-w-n-m-o-w-i-n-g b-u-s-i-n-e-s-s

Finding the keys to my kids' hearts is my job as their mom. With a nostalgic sigh, I realized how their love languages have changed over the years.

How do your kids spell love? How will you be the one to reach into their world and meet them where they are? Are you willing to do those sacrificial things like "zoo trips" for your teens as well as your little ones?
