All the stockings were hung by the chimney with care. The special desserts were tucked away in the refrigerator.
The presents were wrapped carefully and placed under the tree… Dozens and dozens of them. We were ready for the annual Cherry family gift opening celebration. The day my children had saved money for, dreamed of, and longed for.
It did not seem they were all that anxious to receive their presents… But they were so eager to give the treasures carefully selected for each other.
10 children + 2 spouses + mom and dad + 4 1/3 grand babies. We definitely would be settling in for a long gift exchange!
The one thing I didn't factor in…102 degree fevers....sore throats....bad coughs...and chills.
As one by one Nathan's family was overcome with this bad virus we thought it best to postpone our plans so that others would not be exposed. But when one day turned into three with the virus spreading from person-to-person every few hours, we threw in the towel and decided to get together anyway.
We lined up recliners, brought in extra Kleenex, and positioned the windows open in half of the room for those who were hot. Those of us who were left standing healthy and strong tried hard not to breathe too much of the polluted air!
Did it destroy our Christmas festivities? No. But it caused us to have to grab extra patience and grace in the midst of the trial.
Sometimes the greatest family memories are built not when everything goes smooth sailing but when adversity forces us to make an alternative memory.
I don't think any of us will forget soon Christmas 2012… The year of the flu virus and the year of the snowstorms!
P.S. The picture is of our grandchild Ben with his mommy Tara. He did not seem to notice all the trouble for his first Christmas!
