Archives For holidays

house lit for Christmas

By Lisa Cherry

Time to face it. There are only five days left until Christmas and some of your Christmas plans are just not going to get done.

At least not without fussing and stressing and fuming and barking. Just so everyone can have some quality family memories.

It's time to retire the unrealistic. Gracefully and cheerfully and quietly. Remember, you were likely the inventor of that expectation anyway.

I love the holiday season as I get to practice this tip in an obvious way, so that long about February I will hopefully remember it when it is not so obvious.

Lisa...relax those unrealistic expectations! You and your kids will thank you!

Some have asked me how we have instilled a passion for ministry in the heart of our kids. I think one of the greatest answers lies in what we did last weekend.

Our annual family and church tradition: Spirit of Love Operation 350

14 years.
350 boxes each filled with 65 pounds of food.
1000 toys per year.
Prayer stations.

It was at this event last year that Matthew, at age 12, got to lead his first person to Jesus.Op 330 Micah Evan DSC_0394

It was at this event that many of our children have witnessed the incredible value of a five dollar toy to a mother whose Christmas tree would be bare.

Pulling our children out of their comfort zone, giving them an opportunity to serve, challenging them with hard physical labor, and then stretching them to the front line of evangelistic ministry ... I'm so grateful the Lord has deposited His zeal in our kids’ hearts.

Op 350 Jaylynn DSC_0370How about your family? In a world where materialistic desires tempt us into selfishness and isolation have you tapped into God’s kingdom of giving?

It's not too late even this year! Pray and ask the Lord how you could sow seeds of love in mysterious places that only He can see the need.

stockings ChristmasBy Lisa Cherry

Sometimes the holiday preparations can just get me a little overwhelmed.

But this year I have made a concerted effort to take each day and plan the little holiday festivities that I CAN handle, while ignoring the ones that are beyond my reach.

I was so proud of my plan to fabric paint the names on all our Christmas stockings. The last couple years I had failed to get this done and was stuck with notecards labeling them.

So I carefully lectured the troops to stand back away from my creations for the required four hours of drying. I actually felt like I had accomplished something reasonably significant. The kids thought my idea was pretty cool.

Ben stockingBut.....unfortunately Doug was not home for the lecture. So guess whose arm accidentally drug through Baby Ben's name?

When I came into the room later and saw him washing green paint off his elbow, I entered one of those marital testing zones.

Good news. I bit my tongue quickly!

christmas baking 3 cherry 2012By Lisa Cherry

Perhaps you're like me.

When November rolls around, you make a mental list of all of your holiday preparations. Trees, cards, baking, shopping, trips to light displays, parties, etc., etc.

In some sort of crazy way, it all sounds doable in November.

Christmas baking cherry 2012Then you hit about two weeks before the big day, and reality is staring you in the face.  Too many things are left on the to-do list!

Now what you do? Press them all through to completion and make your children live with a cranky mom? Consider this a "failed holiday?"

Well how about this option:

Pick one thing. Do it well. Then cross several other things off the list.

Christmas baking 2 cherry 2012That is the strategy I've used for several years now and it has certainly improved my holiday success.

Last night was my "one thing:" A big family get together with messy cookie cutters and lots of sticky icing.

What made the plan extra special was its location. Since a health issue has kept my mother homebound for a season, we all gathered to bake at my folks’ house.

We did it! We did it!

Now I am free to remember that since I was the one who put all the things on the list, I now can take things off.
